A Scandinavian Minimalism Renovation

Scandinavian Minimalism

In November of 2023, we transformed an outdated home in Old Carrlowood Tampa into a modern masterpiece of Scandinavian minimalism! This full home renovation not only redefined the home’s look but also its functionality, aligning perfectly with the client's vision of a serene and clutter-free living space.

Getting Started

This project began in an unexpected way. Our clients had initially embarked on a renovation journey with us for a different home about a year earlier. However, life took a turn, and they decided to sell that home. When they found their new property—a home built in 1985 with an outdated floor plan and original finishes from the '80s—they knew exactly who to call. Drawn to our design-focused approach, the clients were eager to work with us again, this time to create their dream Scandinavian minimalist aesthetic home. Having never explored this style before, we were so excited to take on the challenge!

Needed Updates

Every renovation has its challenges, and this project was no different. The kitchen, a crucial part of any home, was small and oddly laid out, with a low ceiling that made the space feel cramped and inefficient. The primary bedroom, while spacious, had a closet that was probably great in the ‘80s, but was too small for modern standards. The shower in the primary bathroom was also on the small side and the home had only two bathrooms, despite its four bedrooms.

The Kitchen Transformation

We opened up the kitchen by raising the ceiling to a vault, instantly making the space feel larger and more open. Airy spaces are essential for the emphasis on simplicity and sense of tranquility you want to create with this design approach. The odd layout was repurposed into a dirty kitchen- also called a butler's pantry- a practical and stylish solution that keeps the main kitchen clean for entertaining and everyday use.

This was one of our favorite parts of the project! The dirty kitchen fits perfectly with the Scandinavian minimalist approach: prioritizing uncluttered spaces and a focus on functionality! Quality over quantity will always rule the day with Scandinavian design and by opening up the kitchen we're able to keep clean lines of minimalism without compromising functional design.

Primary Suite Expansion

The primary suite needed a larger closet and shower, so we bumped it out onto the back patio. This fixed both issues! We were able to create a large, modern closet and a spacious shower while still adhering to the minimalist design approach. This helps maintain the timeless elegance of the Scandinavian aesthetic while making sure the primary suite brings a sense of calm- both key elements of the Scandinavian style.

Adding a Bath

By reconfiguring space from the primary bathroom and the foyer, we managed to carve out a powder room for guests—a small but significant addition that enhances the home’s functionality. This helps keep the simple design of the home while still keeping an emphasis on functionality.

Design Highlights

The Scandinavian minimalist style of this renovation is evident throughout, with the simple functionality of custom cabinetry, quality craftsmanship of the top-of-the-line Sub Zero and Wolf appliances, and gorgeous natural elements like the wood floors that add warmth and texture without losing the airy feeling and sense of spaciousness. The home exudes a cozy, inviting atmosphere, striking the perfect balance between simplicity and comfort.
